Proscovia Nakayondo is 40 years old. She and her husband are patients at Alive Medical Services in Kampala, Uganda. The couple live in Kapeeka, a village about a two hour drive from Kampala. In January 2006, Proscovia came to Alive Medical Services with full blown AIDS. Her CD4 count was 80 cells and weighed only 77 pounds.
On her second visit to the clinic, she was very weak and very sad. When Dr. Pasquine asked her why she was crying, she said that it was her last time to come for medication. She said her husband was on his death bed, and they could not afford transport to retrieve the ARVs they both desperately needed, so she would take this medicine and never come back again. Keep a Child Alive helped Alive Medical Services provide transport for Proscovia and other patients in need, and she brought her husband, who continues to be on treatment today and doing very well.
Proscovia and her husband have become a living testimony in the village. They mobilized people in Kapeeka, telling them about Alive Medical Services, and began to bring them to the clinic one by one. Today, 200 people from Kapeeka receive their treatment from Alive Medical Services. Whenever new patients from Kapeeka are very sick, Proscovia makes a point to bring them to the clinic herself. She and her husband also organize a bus every month to bring a group of people from Kapeeka for treatment. Every Christmas, she and this group bring chicken, a goat, and bananas to express their gratitude to Alive Medical Services. Proscovia has been nicknamed “Mama Kapeeka.”
Mama Kapeeka now weighs just over 100 lbs, her most recent CD4 count was 431 cells, and she has regained enough strength to begin farming. She and her husband have four children who are all HIV negative, and they are proud that they can once again support their children on their own.
