Text “ALIVE” Challenge ends

Written on: June 3rd, 2009

On May 1st, 2009, Keep a Child Alive initiated a 30-Day Text “ALIVE” Challenge to collect 100,000 texts by June 1st, 2009 and raise $500,000 to urgently fund KCA sites in Africa and India.

We asked YOU to use your cell phones to text the word “ALIVE” to 90999 to donate $5 to Keep a Child Alive, and to encourage everyone you know to do the same.  As KCA Global Ambassador Alicia Keys says, “No matter how much or how little we each have, when we pull together we have the power to change the world.”

On May 13th, 2009, Alicia Keys appeared on American Idol to announce the Text “ALIVE” Challenge. She introduced a performance by 15-year-old Rwandan rapper Noah, who is a patient at the KCA-funded Icyuzuzo Clinic in Kigali, Rwanda. Through his music, Noah hopes to transform not only his life and the lives of his family, but the futures of millions of people living with HIV. He wants to build orphanages for abandoned children with the proceeds from his album. On American Idol, Noah performed “The World’s Greatest,” and inspired the audience to Text “ALIVE”.

Thanks to the astounding generosity of American Idol’s audience, Keep a Child Alive surpassed our goal of 100,000 texts mid-way through the Text “ALIVE” Challenge!

The Text “ALIVE” Challenge officially ended June 1st, 2009, but WE NEED YOU TO CONTINUE TO TEXT! We cannot turn our backs on the poor in our care; therefore, WE NEED YOUR HELP MOST URGENTLY. Keep a Child Alive has become a lifeline to thousands of families with AIDS who, without our support, would have perished. We are struggling to meet the ever-growing need of the very poor whom we serve, and need the public’s support more than ever. Please act now and do what you can: Text “ALIVE” to 90999!
