Renowned auction house Bonhams, has chosen to support Keep a Child Alive through Bonham’s ‘Africa Now’ Art Auction on March 10, 2010 at 2PM at Bonhams NY: 580 Madison Avenue.

This auction is very special as it will be the first commercial auction of African contemporary art ever to be held in the US, and features work by both new and established African artists.

Giles Peppiatt, Director of African Art at Bonhams says, “We are greatly honoured that ‘Keep a Child Alive’ has agreed to partner at this event. Their credentials as a leading ambassador for African issues made them a natural choice to introduce this stunning collection of the best of contemporary African Art.”

Fierce Fashion Philanthropy!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 | Comment »

kcasmarttix In the summer of 2006, Lou-Torres Gardner lost her cousin, Eddie Payan, to AIDS. Despite all the resources and medication available in the United States, he died at the young age of 33. Lou discovered Keep a Child Alive when we were featured on the Tyra Banks Show, when KCA Global Ambassador Alicia Keys introduced our documentary film, Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland. The film opens a window into the lives of the people in Africa affected by the AIDS pandemic, and shares the stories of children and families who continue to live today with access to anti-retroviral treatment and care. The story struck a chord with Lou, and she decided to organize a fundraiser for Keep a Child Alive, in her cousin Eddie’s honor.

Just Brown presents Fierce Fashion Philanthropy – an amazing fashion, music and dance event to be held at the Thomas H. Slater Center in White Plains, NY on September 5th, 2009, from 7pm-10pm. Tickets are $30 each. Click here to purchase tickets now!

In Lou’s own words: “If I were able to donate my lifespan to these children I would, without question.”

Derryfield High raises 3K for KCA!

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 | Comment »

KCA High School Chapter Leader Yasmin Adam organized a community fundraiser for Keep a Child Alive at her local movie theater and raised more than $3000 for KCA! Yasmin approached the manager of the local Cinemagic movie theater, who agreed to host a KCA fundraiser at the cinema throughout the entire month of May. Yasmin knew that Memorial Day Weekend is the second busiest weekend of the year for movie theaters, so she found it an opportune time to host her fundraiser for KCA!

Yasmin’s experience working at a movie theater inspired her with the idea to collect donations for KCA from every person who bought a movie ticket. After approaching the powers that be at the movie theater for permission, Yasmin and her Derryfield High School Chapter created flyers to post around the movie theater as well as donation cards that donors signed, and then were displayed around the lobby of the theater. Then, she trained the movie theater employees to ask every customer who bought a ticket if they also wished to make a donation to Keep a Child Alive. If people chose to donate $2 or more, they received a free KCA bracelet!

In Yasmin’s own words: “I wanted to do something simple, but profitable, that could easily spread the word about KCA and show the community what we’re all about. Honestly, I felt like I wasn’t doing enough and I wasn’t coming up with extraordinary unique ideas like what I’ve read from other chapters. But I was tired of waiting for lightning to strike so I just ran the event and hoped for success. And it turned out great. I hope that kids follow the lead and don’t feel like they have to do something outrageous for a fundraiser… as long as they just do it, that’s all that matters.”

Keep a Child Alive loves community events like Yasmin’s because she worked where she was, with what she had and who she knew, to put together a simple event that raised thousands of dollars! You can do the same. Join KCA Community today to get started!
