Boikarabelo
Previous GrantJohannesburg, South Africa
Located just down the road from the archaeological site known as the “Cradle of Humanity,†an hour-plus drive from Johannesburg, is Boikarabelo. Part eco-village, school, HIV/AIDS counseling center, ambulance, trauma counseling center and food pantry, Boikarabelo is all acceptance and heart, and since 1990, has been a haven for South Africa’s AIDS orphans, economic orphans and socially abused children. Surviving family members and neighbors often accompany the children; they are also welcomed. Using the traditional African village (and its inherent Ubuntu values of cooperation and joint responsibility) as a model, the community works together to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope, safety, education and sustainable growth to all Boikarabelo residents. In 2008, KCA funded Boikarabelo’s AIDS work, necessities to properly care for their resident infants and children, transport to the local hospital for medical care and food costs.
