Outside Johannesburg, the circle of life has been turned on its head. Older women watch as their adult children die of AIDS, and then are left to raise their grandchildren on their own. Inspired by the incredible resilience of these “Gogos” (“Gogo” means “grandmother” in Zulu), Keep a Child Alive provided the Grannies and their grandchildren with funding to supply food and clothing essentials. More than thirty grannies are now involved in the project, and several are traveling throughout their province, offering workshops to other grandmothers who need the tools to start their own support groups.
