Sahara Aalhad Care Home
Pune, India
The Sahara Centre for Residential Care and Rehabilitation started more than thirty years ago to provide care and support to people struggling with substance abuse. Sahara continues to work today to counter the debilitating stigma that surrounds both substance abuse and AIDS in India. The underserved HIV+ population in Pune relies on Sahara for medicine, surrounding care, HIV/AIDS education, advocacy and vocational training. Through KCA's 2009 Clinton Global Initiative Commitment, KCA began supporting Sahara in its efforts to assist HIV-infected people who have little to no access to treatment and nowhere to turn in the face of poverty, stigma and discrimination. Since KCA began supporting Sahara in 2010, nearly 1500 people have directly benefited from their comprehensive HIV/AIDS care services, including access to ARVs, nutrition, counseling and psycho-social support, outpatient and residential care. KCA funding made it possible for all their facilities and equipment to be upgraded last year, to ensure that they are providing their clients with the best quality of care available. Sahara also recently started a community-based healthcare program that provides nutrition to its neediest beneficiaries. The number of clients that qualify for supplementary nutrition is growing and KCA plans to expand the program in 2011 in order to reach more people.
