Who's running the show?

The promoter is Keep a Child Alive (KCA or Sponsor), 45 Main Street, #720, Brooklyn, NY 11201 USA. Please feel free to contact us if you would like additional information about the prizes and how to enter. By entering the promotion, you agree that these conditions of entry apply to your entry and that Keep a Child Alive's decisions (as the promoter) will be final. Any changes will be published in the official rules on the Keep A Child Alive website at


Can I enter?

Open to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 years of age or older at the time of entry. Also, you can't enter this promotion if you are employees, contractors, directors and officers of Keep A Child Alive. Roommates are not eligible to participate. Promotion is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws.


How do I enter?

You can enter in 2 ways. You can make a donation through your wireless device by texting the word ALIVE to 90999, and reply YES. Your $5 donation will appear on your phone bill (see disclaimer). You will then receive a text alert with a special link to go to our contest website to enter in your information and answer one question - "In one word, tell us what AFRICA means to you." All 100 entries that have been chosen will receive an copy of Alicia Keys' latest CD as well as being notified that they have been selected to enter the second tier of this contest- building your own community page on KCA Community website. The criteria for the second tier of the contest will be announced once the 100 semi-finalists have been chosen. Donations are not necessary to enter. You can also enter for free by mail. Please include the following information on a 5x7 note card: write your name, address, two (2) telephone numbers (for notification purposes), email address and describe in ONE word what best describes Africa. Postcards must be sent to: Keep a Child Alive, 45 Main Street, #720, Brooklyn, NY 11201, for receipt on or before March 31, 2010.

This format must be followed to enter. You will be notified by phone and email if you have been chosen as one of 100 in the second tier.

All entries must be in by midnight, March 31, 2010. You can only enter once - no matter which way you decide to enter - we'll make confetti out of any extra entries you submit. Your entry is received at the time KCA receives it. If your dog eats your entry, it's not KCA's fault. If your entry gets lost in cyberspace or doesn't arrive for any other reason, that's not KCA's fault either. KCA might have to change the dates of the promotion, but only if it's totally unavoidable (and we'll let you know if we do).

Entrants' contact information will only be used by KCA for the purpose of administering the program. All entries become the property of KCA and will not be acknowledged or returned.


How do you pick the winner?

The selection is done in two rounds:

Rather than consulting tealeaves, the first tier selection will be conducted from all eligible entries received throughout the Promotion Period to select one hundred (100) potential "Prize Winners". Once you text the word ALIVE to 90999 and reply YES, you will receive a link to a website where you will enter your information, name address, email and you must answer one question, "In one word, tell us what AFRICA means to you." Click submit and you will be entered. The top 100 answers will be selected to go to the next tier. In the event of duplicative answers, KCA will use a tie-breaker process to help select winners. We will notify the top 100 to build their own KCA Community page and the most creative 5 win a trip to South Africa with Alicia Keys. The decision will be conducted by KCA whose decisions shall be final and binding on all matters relating to the Promotion. Potential Prize Winners may be notified by email and/or phone (at Sponsor's sole discretion) at the email address and telephone number(s) provided by entrant at the time of entry. If Sponsor elects telephone notification, Sponsor's representative will attempt to call each number provided by entrant at the time of entry up to three (3) times over the course of a twenty-four (24) period from issuance of first call and no messages will be left. If Sponsor elects email notification, entrant shall have 24 hours in which to respond to Sponsor's email notice. If entrant does not answer or does not respond to email notification within 24 hours of the email notification being sent, "Prize Winner" status will be forfeited and awarded to another selected entrant. If Sponsor makes contact with an entrant and entrant confirms he or she wishes to receive the applicable prize, Sponsor will send entrant an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability and (unless prohibited) Publicity Release and Prize Acceptance Form, which must be signed, completed and returned within seven (7) business days of the date of notification, or the entrant's prize will be forfeited. Limit one (1) Prize Winner per household address.

The 100 prize winners will be then asked to build a page on KCA's Community website. These 100 winners will be asked to follow a specific criterion to build their page. Criteria will be announced once the 100 have been chosen.

This unenviable task will happen in a small, dark room at 45 Main Street #720, Brooklyn, NY 11201. The judges' decision is final. Lady luck has nothing to do with this promotion.

KCA can cancel or modify the promotion if there are compelling technical or administrative reasons which we cannot control. If that happens, KCA will pick a winner from all eligible entries received at that time.


What can I win?

In the first tier of the contest you can win a CD, 100 will be chosen to receive the CD and they will then be able to build their page on KCA Community - criteria for this will be explained at the time of notification.

The best page wins!

Destination will be to South Africa. Exact trip elements will vary but may include roundtrip, coach class air transportation from a major U.S. gateway airport nearest winner's residence to designated location for winner, up to eights (8) nights standard hotel accommodations, three (3) meals each day per person and select activities. Winner must provide transportation to nearest major US gateway airport. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV"): not to exceed $9,000. Actual value of prize may vary based on point of departure. Any difference between stated value and actual value will not be awarded. Trip must be taken on dates specified by Sponsor or prize will be forfeited and Sponsor will have no further obligation to such winner. Sponsor reserves right to change dates. Travel must be made through Sponsor's agent, on a carrier of Sponsor's choice. Travel is subject to availability. Certain travel restrictions may apply. All federal, state and local taxes and all other costs associated with prize acceptance and use not specified herein as being provided, including transportation to and from airport, luggage fees, additional meals, souvenirs, gratuities are the sole responsibility of the winner.

5 winners will join Alicia Keys on her journey back to South Africa. Winners will depart nearest US gateway airport on June 10th, 2010 and arrive in Johannesburg South Africa on June 11th, 2010. They will accompany Alicia on 5 days of visiting KCA funded sites. They will depart on June 13, 2010 to fly to Durban, South Africa where they will continue to visit KCA funded sites. They depart for home on June 17, 2010. This schedule is subject to change.

These prize values are accurate at the start of the promotion, and any change after the promotion begins is beyond our control.


If you do win...

You can't exchange the prize for cash, or ask us to give it to someone else (not that you'd want to!). If for some terrible reason KCA cannot award the prize as described, we'll substitute it another prize (but we'll decide).

You'll be responsible for all travel costs, taxes, insurance, transfers, visas, personal expenses and any other expenses, fees and costs connected with that prize that are not included in the prize description. The winners are also responsible for all transportation to the point of departure, including accommodation costs prior to and following travel.

If, in order to take the prize, you're lucky enough to need a valid passport with 2 blank pages and valid until September 1, 2010 and/or other necessary travel documentation and visas, you'll need to sort those out for yourself (including finding out what documents you need).

Before we can give you your prize, you'll have to sign a "release", which says that if anything goes wrong with your prize once it's been awarded, you agree that KCA and its promotional partners won't be responsible (unless the law says otherwise).

Of course, if you win a prize, you'll be good and comply with all relevant laws, rules and regulations.


What happens to my entry?

On submission, your entry becomes the property of KCA and you give KCA a worldwide, irrevocable license to reproduce, publish, adapt, communicate and broadcast all or part of it in any form and media, and to sublicense those rights (including to our related companies, licensee publishers and partners). You also consent to us editing, re-using, storing, reproducing and communicating your entry in any medium. Generally, we will attribute you where possible, but in some circumstances, we may decide not to.

KCA will only use the personal information contained in your entry to conduct the promotion and award the prize (but if you've told KCA that you want to receive stuff from us, we'll use your personal information for that too). If you win a prize, KCA can use your name and photograph for future marketing purposes, in perpetuity. You can view KCA's privacy policy at


How do I find out if I won?

We'll give the winner the good news by email or telephone and their name(s) will be published on the KCA website on within 2 days after selection. If you're riddled with curiosity, send us a stamped, self-addressed envelope to us within 3 months of the date of selection of the winner, and we'll write back and tell you who won.

KCA will do its best to find the winner. But if we can't, or if the winner hasn't accepted the prize by 15 April 7, 2010, the next best entry will be declared the winner. KCA reserves the right to terminate this promotion at any time.


GENERAL CONDITIONS: Except as specifically stated above, each Prize Winner is solely responsible for paying any local, state or federal taxes on their Prize; and shall receive an IRS Form 1099 for the ARV of the Prize awarded. Prizes are awarded "as is" with no warranty or guarantee, either express or implied by Sponsor. No cash equivalent or substitution of any Prize is offered, except as specifically provided herein and at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. Prizes may not be transferred. All prize details are at Sponsor's sole discretion. Prizes pictured in point of sale, television and print advertising, promotional packaging, and other Promotion materials are for illustrative purposes only. Actual prize(s) may vary from the prize(s) pictured. In the event of any conflict with any Promotion details contained in these Official Rules and Promotion details contained in point of sale, television and print, advertising, promotional packaging and other Promotion media, ("Promotion Materials"), the details of the Promotion set forth in these Official Rules shall prevail. By participating, entrants agree to these Official Rules and Sponsor's Privacy Policy (available at which are final and binding in all respects. Unclaimed Prizes will not be awarded. If a Prize, or any portion thereof, cannot be awarded for any reason, Sponsor reserves the right to substitute that prize (or portion thereof) with another prize at its sole discretion. If for any reason the Promotion is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Promotion, Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual (and void all associated entries) who is responsible or who tampers with the entry process, and to cancel, modify or terminate the Promotion. In the event of cancellation for any reason whatsoever, at Sponsor's discretion, all Prizes will be cancelled and forfeited.

LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY AND RELEASE: All online entrants must have a valid e-mail address. No liability or responsibility is assumed by Promotion Parties resulting from user's participation in, attempt to participate in the Promotion, download of any information in connection with participating in the Promotion. No responsibility or liability is assumed by Promotion Parties for technical problems or technical malfunction arising in connection with any of the following occurrences, without limitation, that may affect the operation of the Promotion: hardware or software errors; faulty computer, telephone, cable, satellite, network, electronic, wireless or Internet connectivity or other online communication problems; errors or limitations of any Internet service providers, servers, hosts or providers; garbled, jumbled or faulty data transmissions; failure of any e-mail transmissions to be sent to or received; lost, late, delayed or intercepted e-mail transmissions; inaccessibility of the Web Site in whole or in part for any reason; traffic congestion on the Internet or Web Site; unauthorized human or non-human intervention of the operation of the Promotion, including without limitation, unauthorized tampering, hacking, theft, virus, bug, worm; or destruction of any aspect of the Promotion. Promotion Parties are not responsible for entries or emails that are late, lost, stolen, illegible, garbled, misdirected, incomplete, undelivered or damaged, for postage-due mail or lost or stolen entry boxes; or for any printing or typographical errors or any other errors in connection with this Promotion, including, without limitation, errors or problems of any kind that may occur in connection with the administration of the Promotion, the processing of entries or registrations, in the announcement of prizes or these Official Rules, or any inaccurate or incorrect data contained on the Web Site. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. In the event that any provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable or illegal, these Official Rules shall otherwise remain in effect and shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or illegal provision were not contained herein. In particular, Sponsor's employees are not authorized to waive, modify or amend any provision or provisions of these Official Rules in any manner whatsoever.

Use of any website is at user's own risk. Promotion Parties are not responsible for any personal injury or property damage or losses of any kind that may be sustained to user's or any other person's computer equipment resulting from participation in the Promotion, use of the Web Site or any downloaded information. By participating in the Promotion, the entrant thereby releases Promotion Parties from any and all claims, damages or liabilities arising from or relating to such entrant's participation in the Promotion. By accepting a Prize, the recipient agrees to release and hold Promotion Parties harmless from and against, any liability for injuries, losses or damages of any kind to persons or property resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from participation in the Promotion; from acceptance, possession, misuse or use of a Prize (including any travel or activity-related thereto); and any liability for taxes, duties or other levies assessed upon any of the Prizes. Except where prohibited by law, by accepting a Prize, prize recipient grants permission for Sponsor and those acting under its authority to use his/her name, photograph, voice and/or likeness, for advertising and/or publicity purposes, in any and all media now known or hereinafter invented without territorial or time limitations and without additional compensation, notification or permission.
